What is Mobile App Testing ?

About Live Mobile App Testing

Live mobile app testing is a research method used to observe how participants complete tasks inside a real mobile app, installed from the Play Store or App Store. Participants use the app as they would in real life, navigating screens, searching for information, and completing actions, while their session is recorded and analysed.

It's used to identify usability issues, understand navigation behaviour, and evaluate whether a mobile app supports the tasks users need to complete, the same purpose as live website testing, but for a native app instead of a browser-based site.

How Live Mobile App Testing Works

You provide a link to the app being tested (its Play Store or App Store page, or a direct app link) and define a task for participants to complete inside that app. Participants take the entire study on their own phone, using the Decode mobile app to open the target app, complete the task, and return to Decode to continue.

For example:

  • App: A fashion shopping app
  • Task: Find a pair of running shoes and add them to your cart
  • Participants navigate the app freely to complete the task
  • Results show every screen visited, time spent, where participants looked, where they dropped off, and their emotional responses

When to Perform Live Mobile App Testing

Conduct a live mobile app test when you need to evaluate how well a real, published app supports user tasks. Common scenarios include:

  • You want to understand whether participants can complete a specific task in your app without difficulty
  • You've launched or updated an app and want to identify usability issues before or after release
  • You want to observe how participants navigate to a goal inside the app, and which paths they take along the way
  • You need to understand where participants drop off or lose their way during a task
  • You want to capture both behavioural data (navigation paths) and emotional data (facial expressions) during a real app interaction

Use Cases

E-commerce task completion — understand whether participants can find a specific product and complete a purchase inside your app, revealing whether navigation and product discovery work as intended.

Navigation evaluation — after an app redesign, see whether participants can find key sections, and where they get stuck or take unexpected routes.

Onboarding and setup flows — see whether new users can complete account setup or onboarding steps without confusion.

Feature usage evaluation — test whether participants can find and use a specific in-app feature without guidance.

Competitive benchmarking — compare how participants perform the same task across two different apps, giving you comparable data on completion, navigation, and time spent.
