Early-stage market fit testing
Overview
Sometimes you're not ready to test a specific concept yet, you have an early idea or direction, and you want to know if it resonates before narrowing it down to something specific. Early-stage market fit testing lets you gauge reactions to a broad idea, presented visually, rather than a fully defined product or concept.
How this differs from concept validation
Product concept validation assumes you already have something specific to test, a defined image or mockup. This is a step before that, testing something looser, an early sketch, or a rough visual representing a direction, to check whether there's genuine interest before you invest time defining it further. Think of it as checking whether you're even pointed the right way, before you build out the specifics.
How to run this in Decode
Present your early idea using a Media block, see Set up a media block. Since the idea is still loose, lean on open-ended follow-up questions, asking participants what they understood the idea to be, and how they feel about it, rather than only structured rating scales. This captures reactions and language you might not have anticipated, which matters most at this early stage. Enable Facial Coding if you also want an emotional read alongside the open-ended feedback.
What to do next
See Read media block results to interpret your results. Once you have a specific idea worth testing formally, see Product concept validation.
