Prerequisites: prototypes, live sites, apps

Overview

Each User Research method needs something specific in place before you can start. This article covers what to prepare for each method.

For Prototype testing

You need a Figma prototype that's fully set up, with every screen linked and every task flow clickable, and with unused or draft screens removed before you import it.

Before importing:

  • Create a dedicated prototype file containing only the screens needed for this study
  • Remove any draft or unused screens
  • Make sure every task flow is clickable and every screen is connected
  • Test the prototype link in an incognito window first, to confirm it opens correctly
  • Set sharing permissions to "Anyone with the link can view," or note the password if the prototype is password protected, since Decode lets you add this during setup

You'll also need to grant Decode access to your Figma account the first time you import a prototype. Decode can only read the files you already have access to, along with your name, email, and profile image, nothing else.

For Task research

You need a live, publicly accessible website or app that participants can open directly in a browser without logging in first. If your site sits behind authentication, you'll need a workaround, such as a test account or a public staging version, before you launch the study.

You'll also need a clear task written in plain language, specific enough that participants know exactly what they're being asked to do, without being told how to do it.
