TVC effectiveness setup

Overview

TVC effectiveness testing evaluates a television commercial before or after it airs, to understand whether it captures attention, communicates the intended message, and moves people toward the brand or product. "TVC" stands for television commercial, and this kind of testing is one of the most established forms of ad testing, since a TV spot is expensive to produce and air, and mistakes are costly to catch after launch.

What you're actually measuring

TVC effectiveness testing typically looks at a combination of:

  • Attention — do viewers watch, or does attention drop off partway through
  • Emotional engagement — what people feel while watching, and whether it matches what the ad is trying to evoke
  • Message and brand recall — do viewers remember what the ad was for, and which brand it belonged to, after watching
  • Purchase intent or brand favourability — does the ad move people closer to considering or preferring the brand

How to set this up in Decode

Use a Media block within a Consumer Insights study, following the same setup as any other media test, see Set up a media block. Upload your TVC using YouTube and Vimeo (if hosted externally) or Local Media (for an unpublished cut).

For TVC effectiveness specifically:

  • Enable Facial Coding to capture emotional response as viewers watch, since emotional engagement is central to how TV ads are typically evaluated
  • Enable Eye Tracking if you want to know which parts of the frame draw attention, useful for checking whether key branding or product shots are actually being noticed
  • Add follow-up questions after the video to measure recall and purchase intent directly, for example, an open-ended "What was this ad for?" question to check unaided recall, followed by structured questions (Likert Scale, NPS) for favourability or purchase intent

What to look for in results

See Read media block results for the full breakdown of what each metric shows. For TVC specifically, pay attention to how emotional engagement changes across the duration of the ad, a strong emotional response early that fades by the brand reveal at the end often signals a message or attention problem, even if the overall sentiment looks positive.

What to do next

If you're testing a rough or unfinished version of the ad rather than a final cut, see Animatics testing setup instead.
