What is Image Response testing

Overview

Image Response is a block type in Decode where participants respond to a question by capturing or uploading an image, instead of typing an answer or selecting from options.

How it works

You ask a question, and instead of writing an answer, participants respond with a photo, either captured on the spot or uploaded from their device. This is useful when the answer is naturally visual, something a participant can show more easily than describe.

For example, asking "please upload a screenshot that best represents your recent online shopping experience" gets you the actual screen someone interacted with, rather than their attempt to describe it in words.

When to use it

Use Image Response when:

  • The answer is easier to show than explain, screenshots, physical products, packaging, or a real environment
  • You want to see something specific a participant has access to, rather than take their word for it
  • You're collecting supporting evidence alongside other responses in a study, rather than relying on typed or spoken feedback alone
